server side chat history is a property of the server.
Here are releated XMPP standards:
  https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0136.html
  https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0313.html

If this is configured, at least my swift then always shows the recent posts 
when entering the chat.
